Barcelona boss Tito Vilanova has praised young talent Cristian Tello after his growing contribution to the Catalan side this year.

The lively and exciting wing wizard has scored seven La Liga goals and assisted four times this campaign, while he also popped up with a Champions League goal with his first touch against Bayer Leverkusen back in 2012. The 21-year-old Spaniard impressed in the Real Betis victory at the Nou Camp on Sunday which sparked rave reviews from both managers.

Tito Vilanova told reporters: “Tello is a special player, he gives us different things,” said the boss who flew to NYC for few days on Monday to undergo a series of routine tests following his cancer treatment in the United States earlier this year.

“He takes on his marker, he shoots and he’s feeling more comfortable in the first team. “At the beginning of the season perhaps we didn’t think Tello would turn into the player he is today.”

Pepe Mel, the Real Betis top dog praised the impact Tello had on Sunday's proceedings which saw his team lose 4-2 after goals from Alexis Sanchez, David Villa and Lionel Messi back with a double.

Mel commented: “Tello isn’t the future, he’s the present,” said Mel. “He could play for the national team now.”

The fans at Barca really want to see the sparkling Tello get more first-team action and the young lad was made up to hear about his ability being appreciated by the home support. Humbled Tello expressed after the game: “It’s an honour that people want me to play.

“My season has been very good and you always want to play every possible minute, but I’m happy with the time I’ve been given.”

Tello’s main asset is electric pace and tricky wing play which has seen him grab seven La Liga strikes, making him fourth top goal scorer for the Catalan club.

He added: “That’s what I’ve been asked to do by the coach, and the team knows if they can’t find a way through the middle, they always have me out on the wing.”
