Chelsea close to new deal for Belgian star

Chelsea are close to ending speculation over the future of young goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois by agreeing a new deal, according to Calciomercato.

Courtois has been on loan at Atletico Madrid ever since the Stamford Bridge club signed him from Racing Genk in 2011.

However, the Belgium international has expressed happiness with his time at the Vicente Calderon, which has led to speculation around his future as a Chelsea player.

Courtois has also been tipped as a possible makeweight in a deal to take star Atletico striker Radamel Falcao to Chelsea.

The latest report would make this unlikely as it claims Stamford Bridge officials are nearing agreement on a new deal that would extend until 2018.

Petr Cech is currently the undisputed number one at Chelsea and so Courtois’ chances would likely be few, were he to return from his loan spell any time soon – the Czech Republic captain is only 30 years old.

Courtois has been hugely impressive while playing in La Liga and was in goal for Atletico’s triumphant Europa League run last season.
