Manchester United in pole position to sign £50m La Liga hitman

Manchester United are in ‘pole position’ to sign Radamel Falcao this summer, according to reports.

The Daily Star claims Chelsea have dropped out of the race to sign the 27-year-old striker, believing his price tag is too high.

And, the paper reports that the Red Devils have ‘first option’ on the Atletico Madrid forward, although the asking price is also a potential stumbling block for the Premier League champions.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s summer exit could also cause transfer havoc at Old Trafford, with a new manager likely to have new ideas in the market for the Red Devils.

Whoever takes the helm won’t be short of strikers however, with Robin Van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck all vying for first-team chances at Manchester United.

Chelsea, meanwhile, have a shortage of attackers, with Fernando Torres and Demba Ba the only senior options available to interim chief Rafa Benitez this term.

Jose Mourinho, the man tipped to replace Benitez, has seen Falcao’s ability first hand in La Liga over the past few years, but it appears Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is unwilling to break the bank for the Colombian.
