Barcelona are considering a cut-price move for Valencia utility man Jeremy Mathieu, according to Spanish newspaper El Mundo Deportivo.

The 29-year-old - who can operate on the left side of defence and midfield - has been used at times as a centre-back this season by head coach Ernesto Valverde, during an apparent injury crisis at the Mestalla.

His performances are believed to have caught the eye of Barcelona scouts, who have been in town on a number of occasions to make checks on Valencia goalkeeper Vicente Guaita.

Guaita has been identified by the Catalan club as a potential replacement for Victor Valdes at the Camp Nou, but attention has now reportedly turned to Mathieu.

The France international is under contract with the Primera Division club until 2014, and has a buy-out clause of €8million written into his current deal.

Valencia are understood to have held preliminary negotiations with the player's representatives about extending his stay, however, they have also sounded out Barcelona about his potential availability.

Tito Vilanova will be keen to strengthen his defensive options ahead of the 2013/14 campaign, having seen his Barcelona side emphatically knocked out of this year's Champions League at the semi-final stage by Bayern Munich 7-0 on aggregate.
