Current Switzerland national team manager Ottmar Hitzfeld believes that a player from Bayern Munich or Borussia Dortmund could dethrone Lionel Messi and win the Ballon d’Or.
Hitzfeld praised both German clubs for doing so well in the Champions League. Hitzfeld managed both Dortmund and Munich in his career. He managed Dortmund for six seasons and led them to two Bundesliga titles and their only Champions League title during the 1996-97 season.
After he won the Champions League he then proceeded to coach Bayern Munich from 1998-2008. Hitzfeld led the Bavarian giants to five Bundesliga titles, three German Cups and lastly one Champions league title.
Hitzfeld praised Thomas Müller and Mario Götze in particular. Müller was a key component in the 7-0 drubbing of Barcelona as he scored three goals in two games.
Götze on the other hand has been regarded as the next big thing in German football and has played a huge role in Dortmund and their success. Götze will be on the way out next season as a €37 million transfer fee has already been agreed on by Dortmund and Bayern.
Hitzfeld gave his interview in German Magazine Kicker and stated: “Bayern and Dortmund players have a chance in the Fifa Ballon d'Or election this year. The Champions League final will be an important moment," the former Bayern and Dortmund boss told Kicker.”
He then went onto say: "Thomas Muller in particular has impressed me this season. He has developed incredibly well. And obviously Robert Lewandowski.
"Gotze is already world class, too. His transfer will only motivate him. And his start in Munich would be even easier if he arrives as a Champions League winner."
The May 25th final will be huge for all three of these players as they look to get their hands finally on European silverware.
