Stefan Effenberg will not be joining the managerial staff of the Bayern Munich reserve squad, general manager Matthias Sammer confirmed on Monday.
Despite his playing history with Bayern, Effenberg has turned down the opportunity to coach the German giant’s reserve side in the Regionalliga Sud. It appears that a return to the spotlight while bearing the Bayern badge will not come in the Florida resident’s near future.
With the arrival of Pep Guardiola come 26 June, the Bundesliga champions tried to court the services of the eccentric midfielder to groom the up-and-coming youth squad.
Much speculation surrounded the former German international with news of Mehmet Scholl leaving his managerial position for a career in television or to manage SV Werder Bremen if manager Thomas Schaaf abandons his position.
Effenberg was also reportedly linked with the head coaching position at Schalke 04 before current manager Jens Keller's deal was extended until 2015 during the weekend.
Sammer, who once played alongside of Effenberg, announced that the former Bayern captain would not be assuming the role of managing a team in the lower divisions of Germany.
"I am and have been in contact with Stefan," Sammer said in an interview with Sport1 on Monday. "During our talks, it emerged that this is not Stefan's aspiration. He cannot envisage himself coaching a reserve side in the fourth tier."
At the weekend, Bayern Munich’s reserve squad saw their promotion play-off hopes crushed despite a 2-0 victory in a tie against TSV Rain am Lech, as TSV 1860 Munich’s reserve side took a six-point lead in the table.
