The New York Islanders lost a close home game against rivals the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday.
The Islanders suffered this heart breaking defeat after taking the lead three consecutive times during the game.
The ever resilient Penguins however were able to weather the early storm and play catch up throughout the entire game to force overtime.
The Penguins who are undefeated in overtime all season long extended this impressive record through a fantastic goal from Brooks Orpik who scored a stunning strike to send Pittsburgh through to the next stage of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, winning 4-3.
The best-of-seven series finished 4-2 in favour of the Penguins who were heavy favourites going into the tie being seeded number one, but the eighth seeded Islanders sure gave them a run for their money.
The series saw a total of 42 goals scored and overtime twice in the six total games. Previously I was not a big fan of ice-hockey fan, but this series sure made me one.
With the exception of games one and five which the Penguins won by large margins, each game was passionately contested right until the very end. I could not help but feel sorry for the Islanders who, although clearly the less talented team, battled ferociously to make it to round two of the playoffs.
Pittsburgh will now face the Ottawa Senators who won their series with a convincing 4-1 result outscoring the Montreal Canadiens 20-9.
Both the Penguins and the Senators are currently believed to be two of the best hockey teams in the league.
The contest between those two highly rated teams is expected to be a "can't miss" series, but it is hard to imagine it being any more suspenseful than the one which wrapped up on Sunday in Long Island New York, spelling the end of a tumultuous season for the Islanders.
