Arsenal and Chelsea may have to play a Champions League play-off to determine who qualifies automatically for the competition at the end of the season, it has been confirmed.

Both clubs appear set to claim a top four spot, with Arsenal two points behind Chelsea in 4th with a game to go.

However remarkably, if Arsenal win their final game of the season against Newcastle 2-1 and Chelsea record a 0-0 draw against Everton on Sunday - both teams would be left on the same points, and would have scored the same goals scored and conceded an equal amount as well.

Rather than turn to their head to head record - Chelsea beat Arsenal 2-1 home and away this season - the Premier League have confirmed the two teams would then contest a play-off for 3rd place and automatic qualification for the Champions League.

The losers would finish fourth and have to negotiate a two-leg play-off in August to reach the Champions League proper.

When the game would be played is unclear however - Chelsea embark on a tour of the United States and play two friendlies against Manchester City on May 23 and May 25, while England have two friendlies soon after.
