Vertonghen prepared for final push

Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen insists there has been no change to the club’s final day preparations despite Arsenal’s victory against Wigan at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Gunners ran out comfortable 4-1 winners against struggling Wigan, taking them one point above their rivals into fourth place with one round of Premier League fixtures remaining.

Vertonghen and Spurs will host Paolo Di Canio’s Sunderland this Sunday while Arsenal face Newcastle at St James’ Park, and a win for Arsene Wenger’s men will ensure the club play Champions League football next season for the 16th consecutive year.

But Vertonghen maintains that the club are only concentrating on themselves and not their neighbours.

Talking to the club’s official website, Vertonghen said: “All we can do is win our games and it’s important for us to keep believing.”

“We would have to do that anyway on Sunday, so let’s hope we can.”

Spurs go into the Premier League finale in reasonable form having accumulated 12 points from their last seven league fixtures.

And despite going down to an early Steven N’Zonzi strike at Stoke last Sunday, the Belgian international was always confident that his side would overcome Tony Pulis’ side.

“We knew we had to fight for this result,” added the 26-year-old. “We went 1-0 down but fought all the way, kept playing our football and that was important.

“We knew we could win there and we showed passion, played our football and I think we deserved to win.”

Spurs will be hoping for a slip-up from their north London counterparts as they hope to finish above them for the first time since 1995.
