Liverpool have placed Real Madrid defender Raul Albiol on their transfer shortlist, according to reports.

The Daily Express claims Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has set his sights on the 27-year-old as a potential replacement for Jamie Carragher, who retires at the end of the season.

Albiol signed a new long-term contract at the Santiago Bernabeu last summer, but has struggled to hold down a regular first-team place this season after suffering an ankle injury back in November.

And, with manager Jose Mourinho tipped to leave the club this summer, it’s unclear if the 38-cap international will want to remain with Los Blancos until 2017.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have the ‘colossal’ task of replacing Carragher, and will certainly need to strengthen their back line before next year’s campaign.

Sebastian Coates is still struggling to impress for the Merseyside outfit, leaving Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger as the only options to Rodgers.

Albiol, who can also play at right-back and in defensive midfield, would provide strong competition to the aforementioned duo, as well as offer the club plenty of experience at club and European level.
