Cech unhappy with Champions League play-off idea

Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech is unhappy with the prospect of having to play a Champions League play-off with Arsenal if both teams end the domestic season level on points.

The Premier League confirmed earlier this week that if Chelsea draw 0-0 with Everton and Arsenal beat Newcastle 2-1, then both teams would end up tied for 3rd place and would have to play a play-off to see who earned automatic qualification for the Champions League.

The losers of the game would qualify as the 4th English team in the Champions League, and would have to play two play-off games to make it into the competition proper.

However Cech is unhappy with the prospect of playing another game after a long season.

Chelsea will have racked up 69 outings this term after their game against Everton - and the Chelsea stopper believes the fact his side have beaten Arsenal twice already this season should be enough to earn them 3rd place.

Asked after Chelsea claimed victory in the Europa League final against Benfica last night about if he found playing so many games tiring, he said: “Tell me about it! You go places every other day, you play games every other day and you have to refocus.

“We have played in so many competitions, we have flown all over the world.

“It’s tiring, it’s stressful, but in the end you get the reward and you forget about all this.

Referring to the prospect of a play-off, he said: “I don’t really understand it. I know this is the rule, but we beat them twice over the course of the season — home and away — so a playoff would be really extraordinary.

“The rules are like that. Hopefully it won’t happen for both of us.”
