Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher paid farewell to his playing days as his side secured three points in their 1-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers.
The centre-back made 737 appearances for the Reds in his entire career and was more than happy to end it on a winning note, thanks to a stunning first-half goal from Philippe Coutinho.
The 35-year-old Carragher received an all-round reception before and after the game to which he was keen to show his emotions to the adoration of the home fans.
He even came close to scoring on his final appearance with a stunning strike which hit the post. Watching the game, anyone would of thought that Carragher was playing in his mid-twenties, even if he was never blessed with pace, he still managed to keep QPR’s strike force at bay without too much fuss.
“It was very emotional, especially for my friends and family in the stands who have been there to watch me all the time, but that's come to an end now unfortunately,” Carragher told Sky Sports after the final whistle.
Now the question remains: who will now take the helm at the back for Liverpool?
The long-serving defenders Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger will have something to say about it, each possibly bursting to make their mark as the new centre-back to watch for the Merseyside team.
With all the games that Carragher has been involved in, and the legends around the footballing world who retire along with him, we can confidently say that he will not be walking alone.
