Milan turnaround cruelly denies Fiorentina Champions League spot

If you think Tottenham had it rough on Sunday after they missed out on Champions League football by just a point, spare a thought for poor old Fiorentina.

Having beaten lowly Pescara 5-1 on the final day of the season, it looked as though though  Vincenzo Montella's side had secured the 3rd and final Champions League qualification spot with AC Milan 1-0 down against Siena with less than ten minutes to play.

To make matters worse they were already down to ten men after captain Massimo Ambrosini was sent off with 21 minutes left - although Siena had a man of their own sent off a minute later.

Milan were on the verge of missing out on Champions League football - with Inter well out of the picture it would have been the first time in over ten years that neither Milan club would have qualified for Europe's leading club competition.

Then with 81 minutes on the clock Massimiliano Allegri's were awarded a controversial penalty - won by Mario Balotelli who seemed to go down way too easily.

The former Man City cooly slotted home his penalty - and then Phillipe Mexes scored in the 87th minute to deliver his side to the promised land.

Fiorentina, having been celebrating their place in the Champions League earlier, were now left heartbroken.

"Scandalo" screamed the front page of Corriere dello Sport this morning as indignation raged in Italy.

Milan were also 'welcomed' by 30 Fiorentina fans at Florence station on way their way home, with Balotelli and Robinho reacting to the taunts of alleged racial abuse before being the police intervened.
