Oklahoma City Thunder star Kevin Durant has donated $1m to disaster relief following the devastating tornado that wrecked havoc through the state on Monday.

The former-Texas forward has donated the $1m to the Red Cross as the search for survivors continues in Oklahoma.

The state was hit by winds of up to 200pmh at 15:01 (20:01 GMT) on Monday, and the tornado remained touched down for around 45 minutes. 24 people have been confirmed dead, and 120 are currently being treated in hospitals, according to the BBC. It is believed to be one of the most powerful storms on record in the United States.

The tornado ripped through the suburbs of Oklahoma City, the town where Durant's Thunder play. The brunt of the devastation occurred in the town of Moore, to the south of the city, where schools and houses were completely levelled.

President Barack Obama has declared a major disaster in the state, located in the southern area of the United States.

The news first broke of Durant's donation on Twitter, but he was not the person to announce it.

Shortly after the tornado had struck, Durant tweeted: "Praying for the victims of the tornadoes in OKC these last few days…Everybody stay safe."

A couple of hours later, Durant tweeted: "Text "REDCROSS" to 90999 for $10 donation to help tornado victims in #OKC #OKWX"
