Sergio Garcia offered an unreserved apology for his remarks regarding Tiger Woods during a packed press conference at Wentworth on Wednesday.

The continuing feud between Garcia and Woods took a turn for the worst last night, when the Spaniard said he would invite Woods round his house every night for fried chicken during the US Open.

Woods took to Twitter to say that the remarks were hurtful, and Garcia recognised that he had crossed the line at the awards dinner.

"I'd like to make an unreserved apology. I didn't mean to offend anyone," he told a packed press room.

"I was caught off guard by the question and understand the answer was totally stupid. I can't say sorry enough. I'd like to say sorry to the European tour and my Ryder Cup teammates for taking the shine away from a wonderful awards dinner.

"Finally and most importantly I'd like to apologise to Tiger Woods and anyone offended by the comment. I feel sick about it. I hope we can settle down now."

The pair's dislike of each other is well known, with their latest run-in coming after they played together in the third round of the Players' Championship in America.

Garcia was critical of Woods for pulling a club out of his bag whilst he was about to take a shot, generating a reaction from the crowd that put him off his shot.

However, the man who has famously not won a major insisted he wasn't stoking up the rivalry intentionally, and simply tried to give a witty answer to a joke question.

'I'd love to talk as soon as possible and say how sorry I am. I want to apologise face to face and hopefully move on," he added at an originally unscheduled press conference.

'It was not meant as a racist comment. It seemed to be a funny question and I tried to give a funny answer. It came out the wrong way.

'As soon as I left I felt sick. I didn't sleep. my heart felt like coming out of my body. It's hard to hit a shot without thinking about it.'
