A weather-disrupted opening day at the 2013 BMW PGA Championship saw South Africa's James Kingston claim a surprise overnight lead, after he carded a six-under-par 66 at Wentworth on Thursday.

The 47-year-old held a one-shot advantage over Mikko Ilonen of Finland, while Scotland's Scott Henry and Spain's Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano were tied third after both shooting a four-under-par 68.

Italy's Matteo Manassero and George Coetzee of South Africa were both a further shot behind on 69, making up a leading field that is without any of the pre-tournament favourites.

Defending champion Luke Donald scored a disastrous round of 78, finishing the opening day six-over-par and 12 shots behind the clubhouse leader.

Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy bogeyed five of the last six holes to card a two-over-par 74 - the same score as fellow Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell, while the pair's other playing partner Sergio Garcia chipped in from 20-yards to eagle the 18th and finish level par.

Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer fared the best of all the reunited members of last year's successful European Ryder Cup team, but even their opening rounds of 70 left them four shots off the pace going into Day Two.

Justin Rose was another player who fell victim to the closing stretch of the West Course in Surrey, finishing bogey, double-bogey on 17 and 18 to drop from three-under to level-par 72.

Ian Poulter's poor run of form also looks set to continue, after he failed to bounce back from his forgettable World Match Play performance in Bulgaria last week, carding a four-over-par 76.

Overall it was a disappointing day for the strong crowd of spectators, who braved bitter conditions and were forced to endure a 90-minute delay when lightening threatened during the afternoon.
