Watford defender Lloyd Doyley believes that his side under-performed in their Championship Play-off Final and deserved to lose against Crystal Palace.
An extra-time penalty from veteran striker Kevin Phillips gave Palace the victory that earned his side a place in the Premier League next season.
Doyley believes that Watford weren't at their best and thinks the right team won.
He told reporters: "We're very disappointed today, it was not our best game. I think they deserved it overall, they had a few good chances. It was tough to lose on a penalty.
"We didn't penetrate enough though. I think their goalkeeper had a bit of an easy game today, and that's unlike us. We were top scorers in the league for a reason, but Crystal Palace deserved to go up."
The Hornets narrowly missed out on automatic promotion after finishing third and the veteran defender insists that the club must look back at their season with fondness.
"It's been a good season. We played good football, and we finished third- we mustn't forget that. It was great for the club.
"This is definitely one of the best teams I've played in. Players have shined, but it wasn't just one or two players, it was five, six or seven players that have done really well. Next year we'll have to come back fighting."
Doyley made his senior debut at Watford in 2001, after graduating from their academy, and has been at Vicarage Road ever since.
The English-born Jamaican recently made his 400th appearance for the club in all competitions and hopes that Watford can emulate their impressive football next season.
"We played some really good football this year, and the fans have enjoyed it. Over the season the fans have been coming up to me and saying, 'you guys are playing good football, keep it up. We're enjoying it, regardless of what happens.'
"I'm sure it will be the same next year."
