Arsenal target Clement Grenier has been told he should stay put if he wants to develop his full potential.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger admitted on French television that he was interested in the 22-year-old but his manager at Lyon has urged the midfielder to resist any overtures from north London.

Remi Garde was one of Wenger’s first signings when he took the Arsenal job in 1996 but feels Grenier would be better served staying with the Ligue 1 side for now.

Arsenal are reportedly ready to spend big this summer as Arsene Wenger looks to get his squad challenging for trophies once again.

Grenier is now expected to be one of the new faces Wenger tries to bring into Emirates Stadium this summer, with a bid of £8million being mooted in the Express report.

"I already did all I could so that he [Grenier] didn't join Nice last summer," Garde told RMC.

"I know the talent and ambition of Clement. He's a player who can still improve.

“I've told him that, at Lyon, there's everything for him to be able to continue his progress, and then go to a club where he'll establish himself as soon as he arrives.

“I think he's still got a little way to go at Lyon.”

Grenier is currently a France Under-21 international and Wenger has compared him favourably with former Gunner Samir Nasri
