The 2012-13 season has come to a close and, with it, ends the careers of some of the most prominent figures in the modern game, as the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson and David Beckham call it a day.

Ferguson leaves Old Trafford having delivered a staggering 12 Premier League titles during his 26 year stint as Manchester United manager, and now David Moyes has the unenviable task of succeeding the greatest manager in British history.

Beckham, meanwhile, ended his playing days having won yet another trophy - this time with Paris Saint-Germain - and bid an emotional farewell in his final outing for the French champions at the Parc des Princes.

It was a campaign filled with numerous tear-jerking instances, with the returns of Barcelona duo Eric Abidal following their respective health issues providing powerful images as the Catalan club won the title.

Abidal had been missing after undergoing a liver transplant - making his competitive return during Barca's victorious season - while Vilanova missed much of his first term as manager having suffered a relapse in his battle with cancer.

There were, of course, a number of heartbreaking moments on the field as well - 10 of which we have captured in the gallery that follows…
