This year has provided sports fans with a time for greater reflection than most as a number of high-profile athletes and coaches across the spectrum called time on their respective careers.

Sir Alex Ferguson took the decision to relinquish his role as Manchester United manager following a staggering 12th Premier League title triumph, bringing to a close the greatest football coaching career of all-time.

In the NFL, veteran linebacker Ray Lewis bowed out at the top as the Baltimore Ravens claimed victory in the Super Bowl while, in real football, Paul Scholes and David Beckham both decided to call it a day.

Sad times indeed but, at GMS, instead of blubbing following the departure of some of our favourite stars, we have instead decided to get wistfully nostalgic and consider which former athletes we wish were still competing.
