Why Arsenal should sign Marouane Fellaini

With Arsene Wenger expected to splash the cash this summer, recent reports have linked Marouane Fellaini with a move to the Emirates, and the Everton star could be the ideal signing for Arsenal.

It’s been a growing concern that the Gunners have lacked a strong presence in the centre of midfield - since club legend Patrick Viera left in 2005.

The club needs to invest in this area if they are to be more competitive in all domestic competitions next season. If Arsenal can capture the signature of Fellaini he’d fit the bill perfectly for the north London side, and certainly be a  step towards a brighter future.

Although much of this season has seen the midfielder play more of a forward role at his Merseyside club, it’s clear that Fellaini sees himself as a defensive midfielder.

The Gunners will be able to provide him with this role sitting behind Cazola, Walcott and Arteta in a 4-2-3-1 formation. The 25-year-old will thrive in this position complementing Jack Wilshere with his box-to-box style of play, and acting the other half the pivot allowing Wilshere to roam as a playmaker.

His brute strength, aerial presence and ball control will help Arsenal on the defensive end but will also create another attacking threat going forward, especially from set pieces.

In addition, Arsene Wenger would have a very versatile player at his disposal. Fellaini has operated in three main areas for Everton this season – he can play a deeper role in the midfield, as a striker or play behind the striker in a central attacking midfield role. This could be beneficial to Wenger if he wanted to control the midfield in a certain game situation, he could bench  Arteta, replace him with Aaron Ramsey and move Fellaini further up the field, putting another central midfielder in the double pivot role.

Fellaini would follow a similar role to what Abou Diaby does in the double pivot, only it will be more likely that the 25-year-old will have more of an influential role within the squad.

It’s been evident that the boss is slowly getting frustrated with Diaby’s injury proneness and while Arsenal have been linked with other midfielders like Lars Bender and fan favourite Cesc Fabregas, however Fellaini would be an ideal and realisticacquisition for Arsenal.

People forget that Fellaini is only 25, yet he’s already spent five years in the Premier League since joining Everton in 2008 from Standard Liege. He has a vast experience of life in the premier league and will need no time to adapt to the new surroundings. His physical size and power will only serve both himself and Arsenal well in their quest for silverware next season –providing he makes the switch.

Financially it’s certain that Arsenal  have spending power to easily match Fellaini’s desired wages, it’s now up to men upstairs to complete a deal, in what could be an instrumental summer for the Gunners.
