Belgian international Vincent Kompany went above and beyond for his national team last night, playing for more than an hour with a broken nose, cracked eye socket and a mild concussion, according to several reports.
Belgium took another step towards next year’s World Cup in Brazil with a 2-1 victory over Serbia in Brussels to consolidate their grip on first place in World Cup qualifying group A.
But it was the injury to Kompany mid-way through the first half that made the headlines. The team captain required lengthy treatment after a nasty clash of heads with Serbia keeper Vladimir Stojkovic when attacking a corner.
After the team doctor stopped the blood pouring from his nose, Kompany continued to play the remainder of the match before he was diagnosed at Saint Martin's hospital with a broken nose, mild concussion and a cracked eye socket.
Kompany later posted a picture of his injuries on his Twitter feed with the message: “What wouldn’t you do for your country, hey?”
To be fair, I probably wouldn’t do that – looks painful.
