Since the close of the season the papers have been awash with transfer rumours and promises from clubs – claiming that they can bring in new blood to make next season even more exciting than the last.
Arsenal have been a big part of these claims, with Ivan Gazidis claiming that Arsenal will have, by January this year, the finances to rival Bayern Munich and Manchester United.
But all of these claims mean nothing if the clubs are unwilling to put their money where their mouth is; pull out their cheque books and make attempts to sign players.
For the past eight or so years, Arsenal have been a feeder club, nurturing the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Samir Nasri and Robin van Persie to stardom before selling them to a club with more money and firepower where they win some silverware.
If Arsenal can procure the services of a Premier League star then other signings would certainly follow. The state of the Arsenal team as it is cannot win trophies; so why would players like Gonzalo Higuain want to move to north London?
By bringing in one or two players early in the transfer window Wenger will show he is serious about fighting for a trophy next season.
Other players on the Frenchman’s radar are Wayne Rooney, Ashley Williams, Stevan Jovetic and Marouane Fellaini. Buying Fellaini and more than one of these players would mean that Arsenal would break their £20 million transfer fee barrier twice, but if Arsenal can pick up Higuain, Fellaini and a centre-half (perhaps Williams) then their first eleven would certainly be closer to the first teams at the clubs who finished above them this season.
Arsenal will probably have to get a few more players than this to win the Premier League, because as Sir Alex Ferguson has shown over the past 26 years, its consistency that wins the championships, and that means having depth in your squad.
