Independiente fans riot during River Plate defeat

Independiente fans were far from happy with their side’s performance during the 2-1 defeat to River Plate – and decided to riot rather than watch the game.

Whilst the game wasn’t interrupted, the TV coverage certainly was, as cameras showed fans of the visiting team breaking through barriers and walking on the middle section of the stand.

The incident occurred soon after Manuel Lanzini gave the hosts a two-goal lead, and whilst Daniel Montenegro scored a late consolation, his side are now on the verge of relegation to Division B.

Whilst it’s understandable that the fans are unhappy, their actions are certainly not. The footage shows fans gesturing offensively to their rivals, before throwing ripped chairs at the masses below.

The River Plate fans don’t seem too concerned mind you, as they celebrated the impending three points.

Check out the video below, as seen on 101 Great Goals, and let us know what you think about the state of South American football.
