Newcastle United interested in signing England striker

Newcastle United could be interested in Aston Villa's outcast striker Darren Bent, according to the Daily Mail.

The 29-year-old, who has been capped 13 times by England, has been told he can leave Villa Park by manager Paul Lambert, who is looking to press on with his side of young, up-and-coming stars.

A fee of around £6m is believed to be enough to secure the services of the former Sunderland, Tottenham and Charlton Athletic star - who is likely to be keen to move.

But Bent's £70,000-a-week deal could prove a stumbling block to the deal progressing as Magpies owner Mike Ashley is reluctant to over pay.

However, Newcastle are in need of a striker having lost Demba Ba to Chelsea in January, and could be tempted into an offer for a proven Premier League hit-man.

Bent has endured a miserable time at Villa since Lambert's arrival and although as a former Sunderland player he will be starting under pressure, he would back himself to grab goals.

Villa have not received any formal notification yet from St James' Park, but are understood to have been sounded out about a potential move for a striker whose future has been clouded in further doubt by the imminent arrival of Denmark international Nicklas Helenius.
