Former West Ham youth striker signs for Indian club

Dempo Sports Club have bolstered their squad with the addition of former West Ham United academy product Billy Mehmet.

The Irish striker has decided to follow the footsteps of Australian International Simon Colosimo to Indian Football and Dempo SC.

Former I-League champions Dempo had a disappointing campaign last season, eventually finishing in fifth position.

Their tactician Armando Colaco departed soon after and was replaced by Australian coach Arthur Papas.

Papas had done admirably well with Indian U-22 team and AIFF’s developmental side Pailan Arrows last season.

The Australian manager is expected to make Dempo a continental superpower in the future, and is entrusted with the responsibility of rebuilding their squad.

The new manager had identified the importance of foreign players in I-League, and had decided to rope in quality players to boost their chances.

As part of their ambitious plans, Dempo had opted to say goodbye to the under-performing foreign players earlier. With the new season in mind, Brazilian Roberto Mendes Da Silva (Beto) and Colosimo were added in foreign quota.

Beto is a goalscoring midfielder who has a proven track record in I-League, which includes championship wins with Dempo and Churchill Brothers.

Colosimo, meanwhile, was signed from A-League to marshal Dempo’s leaky defence and his leadership qualities are expected to lead the team in transition.

Mehmet is expected to add more firepower to Dempo’s attacks. The former West Ham youth player boasts of playing experience in Scotland, Turkey, Australia and Thailand.

He is expected to play a crucial role in Dempo’s revival - his playing experience across Europe and Asia will be vital to Dempo’s hopes.

Mehmet, 29, will be hoping to make a mark on Indian Football and Aurthur Papas’ Dempo side can provide the ideal platform for the targetman.

Colosimo’s and Mehmet’s addition will be expected to rejuvenate Dempo fans and their hopes of establishing themselves as continental superpowers.
