Chad ‘Bad’ Dawson aged 30 was the current WBC light-heavyweight world champion coming into his fight against Adonis Stevenson with a record of 31 wins, two losses and two no contests.
Dawson boasts victories over some top-level boxers including the great Bernard ‘The Executioner’ Hopkins, Glenn Johnson, Antonio Tarver and Tomas Adamek.
Dawson is a classy looking boxer with a lot of technical ability. Ahead of this fight with Stevenson many were questioning if he would be the same boxer as he was before his fight with Andre Ward. The fight with Ward took place at super-middleweight and Dawson really struggled at the weight, looking weak. It would then be hard to move up properly and still be the same force following such a defeat.
Adonis ‘Superman’ Stevenson aged 35 came into the fight with Dawson as a noted big puncher with a record of 21 wins and one loss. His record doesn’t contain quite the same level of opponents as Dawson and for that reason as well as Dawson’s superior boxing skills I saw Stevenson as the underdog.
I was to be hugely shocked on the night as all of the boxing world was with the fight not even last one round. Stevenson landed a huge left-hand on Dawson and the fight was over with it obvious that Dawson had no idea where he was. It was the correct decision for the referee to step in save Dawson from more harm. Stevenson’s joy was obvious to everyone as he ran around the ring going mad with sheer delight at becoming a world-champion. It was nice to see a victory being celebrate with such joy.
Stevenson now has Britain’s Tony ‘Bomber’ Bellew to face as his mandatory defence. With the styles of the two fighters it is guaranteed that it will be a great fight with two highly determined men going to stand toe to toe and look to inflict serious damage to the other. Bellew is a big puncher who also has boxing skill but often chooses just to march forward and attack. Stevenson is aggressive and a huge puncher but would appear to be less technical than Bellew.
I expect the fight between Bellew and Stevenson to be a very tough and close fight but one which will be hugely exciting. I cannot wait to see it as it will be a good old fashioned tear-up. Bellew probably should look to use a bit more of his technical ability but I just can’t see it happening as he will go back to what comes naturally to him and that is to throw bombs. At the moment I am unable to pick a winner and will have to watch more of Stevenson before making my decision on the victor.
Adonis ‘Superman’ Stevenson well done on becoming WBC light-heavyweight world champion with what was a brutal knock-out showing just what power you possess. Very exciting fighter.
