World Cup 2014 qualifiers: Group A round-up

With the World Cup in Brazil a little over 12 months away, the race to qualify is heating up in Europe nicely. We take a look at how the teams in Group A faired this week.

Croatia 0-1 Scotland

Going into the match, the Croatians knew that a win would put them in a great position for a first place finish, and with Scotland's dream of reaching the Word Cup finals in Brazil already shattered, it seemed as though the points were staying in Zagreb.

However, as it often is in football, you can't take anything for granted. Croatia learned this the hard way, with Robert Snodgrass scoring the only goal of the match in the 26th minute, helping the massive underdogs in securing their first win of the qualifiers.

Belgium 2-1 Serbia

With Croatia playing Scotland in Zagreb, a match that was thought to be in the bag for Igor Stimac's men, the Belgians knew they had to keep their cool against a dangerously unpredictable Serbian side in order to have a better chance of directly qualifying for the World Cup finals.

Marc Wilmots' men were off to a good start as his team went in front in the 13th minute, courtesy of a Kevin De Bruyne header. Marouane Fellaini doubled the lead at the hour mark, displaying the sharpness of the Belgian's aerial attacks. Towards the end of the match Serbia managed to pull one back, Kolarov was the scorer from a set-piece.

Belgium and Croatia are the runaway leaders of the group, fighting for the top spot. The Belgians have a slight advantage, seeing as they are three points clear. However, they are still to play their away game against Croatia, who will be determined to make sure the points aren't going anywhere.

Aside from this match, both teams have tough away games against Scotland. Croatia will have their work cut out for them when they face fierce rivals Serbia, again away from home, while Belgium will be looking to avoid any upsets against Wales on their own turf.
