Robert Lewandowski has been told he won't be allowed to join Manchester United - or any other club this summer - by Borussia Dortmund, according to the Independent.

The Polish striker is hankering for a move away from Dortmund this summer and is believed to have agreed terms with Bayern Munich.

Manchester United have been linked with the 24-year-old, who is out of contract next year, for some time.

Despite the interest from the Red Devils and the fact Dortmund won't be able to demand a fee for the striker, the German club are seemingly willing to let him run down his contract rather than sell him to a rival.

The Independent report that Lewandowski has been told that he won't be allowed to join Manchester United after previous reports suggested Dortmund could be willing to listen to offers from non-domestic rivals.

The paper claims both Manchester United and Bayern Munich had been preparing offers in excess of £20m for Lewandowski, but Dortmund are adamant that he won't be sold, to the point where they are willing to sacrifice a hefty transfer fee.

Dortmund's chief executive Aki Watzke confirmed as much earlier this week, and said the club had never promised to let him move this summer.

"Such a promise to Robert has never existed,” he said. “We have said everything that had to be said.

”I can understand he is disappointed. If I was him I'd also be disappointed to hear about FC Bayern not making an offer for him.

“What I expect from him now is to show the strength in character he has shown over the past years and cope with the situation on a professional level. I am confident that he will do so. 2014, when his contract runs out, he is welcome to join Munich.

”I can only call off the wish I know about. Why should I bother about other clubs when all we know about is that he only wants to join Bayern.“

Manchester United had been heavily linked with Lewandowski in the aftermath of the revelation that Wayne Rooney had handed in a transfer request at the tailed of last season.
