The Chicago Blackhawks beat Boston Bruins 4-3 to open the Stanley Cup finals best-seven-series with a win.
The Bruins surrendered a 2-0 and 3-1 lead to eventually lose 4-3 in the third overtime making it the fifth-longest game in Stanley Cup finals history.
Chicago Blackhawks' Andrew Shaw scored the winning goal leaving the Bruins rueing missed opportunities.
The Bruins had got off to a fine start as Milan Lucic scored two goals to put them into a 2-0 lead. The Blackhawks fought back but the Bruins held a 3-1 lead during the third period. But the momentum swung in Chicago's direction as Dave Bolland scored with eight minutes gone in the third period.
Just four minutes later it was all level as Jonny Oduya's speculative effort was going wide only for it to deflect off of Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference's skate and trickled over the line.
Players on both sides looked fatigue as they entered overtime. The Bruins and the Blackhawks were guilty of missing plenty of chances to finish the match but both goalkeepers did their best to make the match continue.
Bruins were within inches of winning the match in the second overtime when Zdeno Chara's shot from distance struck the inside of the post and came out. But Bruins' best opportunity came just two minutes before Shaw's winner when Kaspars Daugavins had a wide-open net but couldn't capitalise.
But it was Andrew Shaw who turned out to be the hero with 12:08 of the third overtime played. Bruins will be cursing their missed chances and wondering how they didn't take the series win.
With the match being the fifth longest game in Stanley Cup finals history both teams will be glad that Game 2 isn't until Sunday.
