Monaco defensive midfielder Nampalys Mendy has admitted Manchester United are his 'dream club' - but insists he's focussed on continuing to develop in France before thinking about any move to the Premier League.

The 20-year-old Frenchman has been dubbed the 'new Claude Makelele' after starring for Monaco in the French second division last season.

He's been linked with Manchester United, and the France under-21 international admits the Old Trafford club have always been one of his favourites.

"It's encouraging," Mendy said of United's interest as reported by ESPN. "They're the club of my dreams. It proves that I've done some good things, but I want to stay in France.

Speaking to L'Equipe, Mendy revealed he would announce his plans for the future when he gets back from holiday in Morocco.

"I've already made by choice," Mendy said. Reports in France claim he's agreed a pre-contract deal with Nice, and will join the south coast club this summer.

Monaco's aggressive transfer strategy so far has led to suggestions Mendy feared for his place among the new look squad - something the player denies.

"It's not because of the competition," said Mendy. "I'm not afraid of that. Everywhere I go, there'll be that.

"And it's not Ranieri's fault either. If there had only been him, I would have extended my contract…it's simply that I didn't like several things that happened during the renegotiation of my contract."

Monaco have spent big this summer, bringing in Radamel Falcao from Atletico Madrid, and Joao Moutinho and James Rodriguez from Porto.
