Arsenal shareholder Alisher Usmanov has identified Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney as the ideal acquisition to transform the north London club into title contenders next season.

The Gunners are set to spend big during the summer transfer window, with Gonzalo Higuain of Real Madrid reported set to swap the Santiago Bernabeu for the Emirates Stadium in a record deal for the club.

Rooney has also been touted as a potential target for Arsenal, after the 27-year-old requested to leave Old Trafford at the end of last season - something confirmed by former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis has insisted the club have the funds to be able to afford a player of Rooney's calibre this summer, although it is unclear if the Gunners have actually made an approach for the player.

Should Arsenal decide to move for the Manchester United star, then Usmanov would be the first to welcome it - with the Uzbek-born businessman of the belief any potential transfer would be a fruitful one for both the player and the club.

"He is a great player, there would be great success for Rooney [if he joined Arsenal], and for Arsenal too," Usmanov told CNBC.

Rooney has also been linked with a transfer to Paris Saint-Germain, while Chelsea have been credited with interest in the former Everton trainee.
