Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has revealed that Simon Mignolet will not act as a replacement for Pepe Reina, if the Sunderland 'keeper joins Liverpool this summer.
In an interview with talkSPORT, the Liverpool manager stated he has great respect for the Spaniard, who has made over 250 appearances for the Reds since his arrival from Villarreal in 2005. Reina is also the record holder for appearances by a Spanish player in the Premier League.
But in the past view days, Rodgers seems to be getting closer to the signing of Sunderland shot-stopper Simon Mignolet.
And because of this, Reina has been linked with a move back to Barcelona, whom he played for between 2000-2002. Current Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes has only one year left on his current contract, and confirmed that he will look at other clubs at the end of next season, possibly paving the way for Reina to make the move back to Barcelona.
However, the former Swansea City manager has confirmed that Mignolet will not be replacing Reina as Liverpool's number one, but battling him for the goalkeeping jersey.
Rodgers stated: "One of the things we're trying to build is a competitive squad. Our squad was very thin last year and it was great we were able to introduce a few young players from our academy, but it's very important that we have competition in every position and that wasn't always the case."
Rodgers also confirmed that he and Reina had discussed the probability of a new goalkeeper joining the club to compete for places, and this was something that interested the Spaniard.
"Pepe Reina and I went out for a meal a couple of months before the end of the season and I told him exactly what we were going to do, which was to provide real competition in that area.
He was fully aware of my intention over the course of the last few months. It certainly wouldn't be a surprise to Pepe. Pepe is a fantastic goalkeeper but Simon Mignolet is a player that has done well," added Rodgers.
