Andres Iniesta produces stunning performances on a weekly basis that combine skill, vision and work ethic - Spain’s first game of the Confederations Cup against Uruguay was testament to that.
His goalscoring record is by no means up to scratch with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, but does that make them better players?
Iniesta is a world-class footballer: he has won the Champions League, La Liga, World Cup, European Championships, he has scored the winner in the World Cup final and famously scored a spectacular last-gasp winner against Chelsea in the Champions League semi-final. His achievements are endless.
The 29-year-old’s sublime turn of direction and his awareness of space and of his colleagues’ movements is truly mesmerising.
The playmaker’s close control and skill in tight areas is arguably as good as his Barcelona team-mate Messi’s. His close relationship with Spain and Barca compatriot Xavi has certainly aided the development of his career.
The product of the infamous La Masia academy has finished second and third in the Ballon d’Or up to now, but why hasn’t he won it?
Messi and Ronaldo are always held in higher esteem, but just because they score more goals it does not justify the pair as more spectacular players.
Firstly both play in more advanced positions, often now occupying centre-forward roles. Iniesta, on the other hand, can dictate play and up the tempo of his team’s play through the drop of the shoulder, a shimmy or a decisive pass.
Neither Messi nor Ronaldo do this as often as the Spaniard. Zinedine Zidane did not fail to receive the recognition for his talents despite his lack of goals and nor should Iniesta.
