Manchester United have reportedly emerged as serious contenders to sign Saint Etienne centre-back Kurt Zouma, although Chelsea still retain an interest in acquiring the signature of the teenager.

According to SportsDirect News, Chelsea have a long-standing interest in Zouma having monitored him in the summer transfer window of last year, but Manchester United are ready to enter the race to sign the Frenchman.

Chelsea are reportedly considering a £10 million bid for the 18-year-old defender with their interest in the player having intensified after his impressive season for Les Verts, during which they won the Coupe de la Ligue.

The Blues are reported to have contemplated moving for Zouma 12 months ago but decided he was not worth the risk, and this hesitation could prove costly with Manchester United also pursuing the player.

New Manchester United manager David Moyes has, it is claimed, identified Zouma as a potential recruit before September's transfer deadline as he plans to reinforce his defensive unit.

Moyes inherits a side with two battle weary centre-backs in Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, with the former having committed to just one more season at Old Trafford by signing a new deal at the end of the season.

The acquisition of fresh blood in the centre of defence would appear to be on the mind of Moyes, and Zouma may be the player to move to Manchester over the summer months.
