Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla has revealed that confidence in the camp is at an all-time high and the players are raring to go ahead of the new season.
The Gunners ended the 2012/2013 campaign on a high after they clinched fourth spot ahead of their north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur on a dramatic final day of the season.
With a win needed to secure their Champions League fate, a Laurent Koscielny goal at St James Park against Newcastle United was enough to see Arsenal finish fourth ahead of Spurs, who incidentally beat Sunderland 1-0 thanks to a late Gareth Bale striker.
The fourth place finish looked far off in early March but a run of 10 unbeaten games helped them to a 16th consecutive top four finish.
Eight wins and two draws in their final 10 was enough to give Arsenal Champions League football once again and conceding just four goals along the way gave the side a new-found confidence.
Midfield-man Santi Cazorla, who was voted the fans Player of the Year, believes the new-found confidence within the players will be a boost for them next season and he believes that their self-belief will be shown on the pitch come August.
“Every team in the league has a complicated period at some point and their level drops,” he told the official Arsenal Magazine.
“When the team doesn’t win and doesn’t get the results we want, the collective confidence drops a little. That is natural.
“Now, we’ve put in a spectacular run-in and you can see the difference in mentality. We have great players. I’m sure next season we’ll be a better team - it’s clear this squad has plenty of potential to improve.
“[We want] to fight for trophies. Next season, we hope we can be even better, win trophies and the supporters can enjoy it. I hope I can keep developing, too.”
