Cardiff & Sunderland plot move for Le Havre defender

Cardiff City and Sunderland are set to go head-to-head in a transfer battle for Le Havre full-back Benjamin Mendy, according to reports on SkySports

The 18-year-old defender has been trailed by Arsenal for much of the last 12 months, is expected to complete a move to England in the near future, but it's possible that the Gunners are no longer his most likely destination.

Le Havre have admitted to opening discussions with several interested parties.

However, with Mendy declaring his desire to move to the Premier League, French giants Marseille and Lyon find themselves at the back of the queue.

Jean Pierre Louvel, Le Havre's club president, told reporters: "We are talking to clubs and the talks with English teams are going better than others.

"He is most likely going to go and play in England."

Mendy admits he would welcome the opportunity to test himself in the Premier League, with the youngster determined to keep his career heading on an upward curve.

He told RMC: "I have always dreamt of playing in England so I am happy to be linked with English clubs.

"I know it is a big step to go there straight away, but if you want to progress in Europe you need to play at the top level."
