Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs made a surprise appearance on Countdown this week to celebrate Rachel Riley's 1000th show, having himself reached the same number of matches last season.

Riley, who succeeded Carol Vorderman as the cult quiz show's resident number bod in 2009, was left speechless as Giggs came on set to mark her achievement - particularly as she was unaware it was her 1000th episode until it was announced by presenter Nick Hewer.

"I had no inkling that I had just filmed my 1,000th episode when Nick announced it on the show, and I was touched that the Countdown team had surprised me with the news," she said.

"As Nick continued, I thought they might have got me a bunch of flowers. But I nearly fell through the floor when Ryan Giggs suddenly appeared with some."

As well as giving Riley, a Manchester United fan, a peck on the cheek and a bunch of flowers, Giggs also presented her with a personalised Red Devils shirt, much to the delight of the clearly gobsmacked boffin.

After Giggs had offered his congratulations to the 27-year-old, Riley said she had no plans to retire from Countdown - and hoped the Old Trafford superstar had no intention to hang up his boots any time soon.

Giggs, who turns 40 later this year, confirmed he will not be lowering the curtain on his illustrious career just yet, with the new season heralding a new era at Manchester United following the appointment of David Moyes as manager.
