German giants hold 'positive' talks with Arsenal defender

Hannover have confirmed they are moving closer to wrapping up a deal for Arsenal defender Johan Djourou.

The 26-year-old has fallen well down the pecking order at the Emirates Stadium, and spent last season on loan with the German club.

Djourou has made just 34 Premier League starts for Arsenal since August 2009 and is expected to leave the club this summer.

The Arsenal flop is attracting interest from Hamburg, but Hannover 96 general manager Dirk Dufner says he is confident he can get the deal over the line.

"We are in touch with Arsenal FC and we feel talks with the clubs have been put on the right track. We are confident. The lad will now need to make a decision," he told BILD.

"He needs to say where the road will lead him next. He knows what Hannover 96 is about and we definitely did the best we could. I hope this will be enough to see him decide for us."

Previously Hamburg general manager Oliver Kreuzer had done his best to dissuade Djourou from leaving north London to join Hannover.

HSV is HSV, and we are just a better club," he said, before adding: "We are trying to sign a player. We are not out to belittle a competitor."
