35-yard Ecuadorian wondergoal undermined by defender howler

With Brazil’s destruction of Spain at the Maracana on Sunday night, South America has been the place to be for spectacular goings on in the football world.

Neymar scored a lovely second in the Confederations Cup but it was nothing compared to the absolute screamer from an Ecuadorian league match.

Edson Montano is not a name that was terribly familiar within the GMS office, but we won’t be forgetting the Deportivo Cuenca attacker any time soon after his goal against El Nacional.

You can’t really blame the away defenders for not suspecting there was much danger when Montano picked up the ball and turned towards goal about 35 yards out and to the left of the area just after half an hour.

They won’t be letting him do it again though – the 22-year-old unleashed an incredible dipping shot that left the El Nacional goalkeeper with no option others than to watch it sail over him and into the corner.

It was wonderful strike and good enough to win any game – the only problem was Montano’s teammate then produced an error so awful it deserved to lose any game – it finished 1-1 in the end.

You can watch Edson Montano’s screamer below and the defensive howler that undid his spectacular work below (thanks to 101GreatGoals for pointing it out)…
