Lionel Messi receives $50m portrait

Lionel Messi received one of the craziest presents ever on Monday, as the Barcelona superstar was handed a self-portrait made entirely of Swarovski crystals.

The man behind the extravagant piece of art was Colombian artist Mauricio Benitez - aka 'Mr Bling' - who was pictured presenting the Argentina international with the gift earlier this week.

Valued at an estimated $50million - or £33million - it's undoubtedly one of the most expensive donations ever made, so it's fitting that the recipient is none other than the world's best player.

And, as Messi prepares to report for pre-season training at Camp Nou, the Barca forward spoke of his excitement at the prospect of playing alongside another of the world's brightest young talents, Neymar.

The Brazilian completed a €57million move from Santos to Barcelona prior to the Confederations Cup, and will link up with his new team-mates later this month.

"I know Neymar is a great player who is going to bring a lot to Barcelona," reflected Messi. "God willing, we will be able to play together at Barca."
