Wayne Rooney is flying home from Manchester United's pre-season tour just one day after arriving in Asia due to a hamstring injury suffered in training earlier today.
Rooney will return to England imminently to begin extensive treatment back at the clubs' facilities in Manchester according to the official Manchester United Twitter account.
Rooney's injury is the official line given by Manchester United but the conspiracy theorists on social networking sites will be licking their lips at an opportunity to speculate that this injury is merely a smokescreen for Rooney to negotiate a transfer away from Manchester United - despite David Moyes' claims that he is staying.
This does seem rather ridiculous at this stage as you have to wonder what could so dramatically change in little less than 24 hours that would not have prevented Rooney flying out with the touring party initially.
Rooney's injury is a further blow to Manchester United on a day when it appeared Bayern Munich had moved ahead of the English champions in the race to sign Barcelona midfielder Thiago Alcantara.
Thiago's former manager Pep Guardiola revealed this morning: "Thiago is the only player I want. It is Thiago or no one."
With Rooney leaving the Manchester United tour, Moyes now has only one recognised striker in Danny Welbeck to select for Saturday's match against the Singha beer selected All Star XI.
Fellow strikers Robin van Persie and Javier Hernandez are due to join up with the touring party later on in the summer.
This may well mean we will see Wilfried Zaha played in forward role on Saturday rather than in his preferred position on the wing.
Rooney is expected to land back in England tomorrow and will continue his recovery from then on.
