Jose Mourinho wants Drogba back at Chelsea

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is working on a shock swoop for Galatasaray forward Didier Drogba, according to the Daily Mirror.

The report claims Drogba met Mourinho for private talks at Chelsea’s Cobham training ground last week. Although the nature of the discussion is undisclosed, it is understood that the Chelsea manager is keen to re-sign the 35-year-old striker.

Chelsea would face resistance from Galatasaray if they made a move – the Turkish champions fought hard to sign the world-class forward from Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua and he’s their marquee player as they look to make an impression in the Champions League.

But Chelsea have a plan should Galatasaray refuse to negotiate. Drogba is out of contract at the club in 12 months time, so the Blues could wait until next summer before offering him a role at Stamford Bridge.

The report claims it is only a matter of time before Drogba returns to the club where he’s loved – what remains to be seen is whether it’s this season or next.

In fact, Chelsea boss Roman Abramovich reportedly targeted the Ivory Coast international in the January transfer window. Although a move never materialised, the Russian oligarch is thought to be eager to see Drogba back in west London.

When asked about a potential return to Chelsea at some point in the future, Drogba said earlier this year: “It would be nice, not just coaching but to help the club.

“For Chelsea I gave everything and, of course, they gave it back to me. I feel at home when I go to London.”

Mourinho, who signed Drogba from Marseille during his first spell at the club, spoke earlier this week about the striker’s influence. He said: “I can use Didier as a profile to persuade youngsters to follow me because he followed me from day one.”
