Victoria Pendleton's six top tips for training

Victoria Pendleton is looking forward to returning to the Olympic Park for the National Lottery Anniversary Run this Sunday - and she's got some top tips for runners training this week.

The Olympic gold medallist swaps the velodrome for the track this weekend when she takes part in the five-mile event around Stratford before finishing in the Olympic Stadium.

And Pendleton has shared some of her top training tips for those getting in shape, talking you through the exercises in the video above.

From inclined press-ups to crunches and tricep dips, Pendleton lets you in on the secrets to a successful training programme.

Some, like the tricep dips, are fairly simple. But others, like heel pushes and side push-ups, require a little more planning and effort.

"This [heel pushes] is a challenging exercise," said Pendleton. "This works your lower abs and it's a very small movement."

Some runners neglect exercises that work the upper body, but several routines - such as side push-ups - work the core as well.

"A lot of people work their core but don't do so much on their obliques and that's what cinches you in at the sides. It's great for slimming the waist down."

As for the run itself, the retired world champion track racer can't wait to return to the glorious scenes of last summer.

"I'm really excited about going back to the Olympic Park," Pendleton told The Metro.

"That was actually the dealmaker, to be honest. I never thought I would have an opportunity to run on the track."

Pendleton has been training at the Lee Valley Athletics Centre in London, but it's been nothing compared to the work she put herself through for the Olympics.

As a result, the former-Olympic superstar says she sometimes doesn't recognise herself in the mirror anymore.

"I've lost 7.5kg since I stopped training," Pendleton continued. "I lost a lot of muscle mass after the Olympics as I wasn't weight training.

"Now when I look in the mirror I feel a bit weird. This is not how I have looked for the majority of my adult life. I look at my leg and think; "Where's the other half gone?"

Her six top tips are: Side push-ups, heel pushes, tricep dips, Bulgarian squats, crunches and inclinced press-ups.
