Southampton’s academy is known for producing top quality English footballers and in recent years has housed Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Theo Walcott and Gareth Bale.
The current batch of youngsters currently plying their trade down at St Mary’s also seem to show a certain level of star potential. Here we look at three of the most talented youngsters Southampton have to offer.
Luke Shaw has recently signed a new 5-year contract with the Saints who seem to have resisted the temptation of cashing in on the 18-year-old who was believed to be a target for Manchester United and Chelsea.
The Londoners seemed to be leading the race for Shaw, who has been likened as a natural successor to Ashley Cole. Shaw is an attack-minded full back who is extremely fast and can carry the ball for long distances. Shaw made his debut for Southampton in January 2012 for a FA Cup forth round replay against Millwall. He has since gone on to make 25 appearances in the Premier League.
Ward-Prowse also made his debut in a cup competition this time facing Crystal Palace in the League Cup. James has also only recently penned a 5-year extension. The young central midfielder has been described by some as having the passing ability of a young Frank Lampard.
High praise indeed for a man who only made his Premier League debut against Manchester City less than a year ago. He has made several appearances for England’s Under 17’s, 19’s and 20’s although he has not been capped at under- 21’s level.
Chambers is the only player out of the three yet to make his debut for the first team in the Premier League. His debut for Southampton came in a 4-1 demolition of Stevenage in the League Cup where Chambers was brought on late in the game and managed to provide an assist to one of his team mates.
Chambers is seen as a versatile player by the Southampton coaching staff as the player is able to play on either wing, in the central midfield position as well as being able to slot into the right- back role. It seems that 2013/2014 will be the year for Chambers to break out of the academy like Shaw and Ward- Prowse and make a big impact on the Premier League.
