West Ham's record signing Andy Carroll is set to miss the beginning of the new Premier League season through injury, but manager Sam Allardyce is confident the striker will be fit before the September international break.
Carroll completed a £15million deal from Liverpool last month after having spent the previous season on loan at Upton Park, however the English forward has not featured during the pre-season campaign so far as a result of a heel injury.
The Irons are preparing to head to Germany next as they step up their preparations following a 2-1 victory at Colchester on Tuesday evening, and Allardyce is not going to rush the 24-year-old's return.
"Andy is still recovering. He has got four weeks or more to go before he starts full training. His rehab is going pretty well at the moment and will be joining us in Germany, and hopefully he will be available, as will George McCarthy, as quickly as possible," the West Ham manager told the Daily Mail.
"I hope it will be before [September] for both of them, but being fit and being ready to play are two different things - they may be fit from the injury, but they are unlikely to be capable of playing straight away.
"If we are going to put our lads through six weeks of preparation and then Andy gets fit with two days to go, you would not expect us to play him, would you?"
West Ham are set to face Hamburg and Mainz while on their German tour and Carroll will join up with the squad as he continues his rehabilitation.
England boss Roy Hodgson will be hoping the 6ft3in forward is fully fit for the start of the season, as he could be a key figure for England in the next set of World Cup qualifiers.
