Stewart Downing staying at Liverpool

Stewart Downing insists he will stay with Liverpool beyond the summer transfer deadline, amid suggestions the winger is a target for West Ham.

The Hammers were reported to have been considering an approach for the 28-year-old as Sam Allardyce bids to bring further reinforcements to Upton Park over the summer months.

West Ham have already completed the signing of one player from Liverpool having recruited Andy Carroll in a club record deal, and Downing has also been on the radar of the east London side.

Allardyce, however, has since admitted Downing is out of the club's price range, and Downing has also moved to put an end to speculation about his future by claiming he still has an Anfield future.

"I'm here to stay," he told the official Liverpool website. "I'm enjoying it - especially last season. I got a good run in the team. Hopefully that will continue, and I need to work hard.

"I want it to continue. It's why I came here - to play in a successful team. I want that to continue as long as possible."

Downing has failed to live up to expectation at Liverpool since his £20 million transfer from Aston Villa two years ago, although did show signs of recapturing his form of old last season.

The England international scored five goals and provided nine assists last term, compared two only two of each during his maiden campaign on Merseyside.
