Arsene Wenger: Arsenal can afford to buy Wayne Rooney

Arsene Wenger insists Arsenal would have no problem coming up with the cash to sign Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney this summer.

Rooney looks to be on his way out of Old Trafford after reports suggested he was 'confused and angry" following on from revelations from former boss Sir Alex Ferguson that he had handed a transfer request on the last day of the 2012/13 season.

New manager David Moyes has insisted the 27-year-old, who has two years remaining on his current £230,000-per-week deal, is not for sale but Chelsea look intent on testing that resolve after having a bid for the striker turned down yesterday.

Arsenal meanwhile are continuing their hunt for a big-name striker and have so far been frustrated in their attempts to land Gonzalo Higuain from Real Madrid and Liverpool's Luis Suarez.

The Gunners have also been linked with a sensational move for Rooney, and Wenger says he is ready and able to take Manchester United's leading man off them, a reversal of the Red Devils's swoop for Robin van Persie last summer.

"It happened to us last year and it can happen to them," said Wenger.

"Rooney is under contract and has two years to go so it's United who make the decision. But we would not have a problem with the wages of Rooney."

While Rooney looks set to be the focus of a sizeable transfer battle this summer, another star whose future has been called into question is ex-Arsenal midfielder and Manchester United transfer target Cesc Fabregas.

The Red Devils reportedly had a €30 million bid for the Barcelona midfielder turned down this week and Wenger says he has been led to believe the 24-year-old won't be on the move this summer.

"Cesc has decided to stay one more year at Barcelona," he added.

"We have the clause in his contract to have the chance to buy him back so we would be on alert if that happens."
