Marseille showed that football rules over rugby union – sort of – with a 36-35 victory over Toulon at the Stade Mayol.

Two of the biggest names in French sport went head-to-head for charity, with the first 45 minutes played with the feet, and the second 40 with the hands.

Unsurprisingly, it was Marseile who did the damage early, taking a two-goal lead over the Heineken Cup champions. Goalkeeper Steve Mandanda, playing in midfield, scored both.

However, the Top 14 runners-up – who have Jonny Wilkinson in their line-up, struck back to take a 3-2 lead. Marseille managed to turn it back around before the break, and were 5-4 ahead when the circular ball was swapped for an oval.

Toulon took advantage with some quick tries, but Andre-Pierre Gignac and Alaixys Romao went over for L’OM to put them back in the game.

Delon Armitage, who earlier scored a stunner with the football, then put the hosts back ahead, but Marseille physio Christophe Manouvrier went over the whitewash late on to secure a 31-31 draw in the rugby, and a 36-35 victory overall.

Best of all, French legend Eric Cantona was involved in proceedings, acting as a guest referee during the match.
