Fifteen years ago, Jamaica fielded a very good football squad which was supposed to indicate the arrival of Jamaican football level on the international scene.
However, the Reggae Boyz have failed to make such an impact on the football world.
I believe that this is a result of their inability to field younger players in international games.
There has been little activity with youth players on the national squad. The aim of most countries in a footballing aspect is to have continuity, but Jamaica are different.
The Jamaican belief is that you should field the players you know and that have seen perform.
That is a terrible practice if you don’t give all your players a fair chance to prove themselves.
What if you have the next big thing just wasting away, watching the game instead of playing in it?
But the sudden reality of the situation is that Jamaica is now more a Track and Field country than it was 15 years ago.
The entire world recognises the country for athletes like Usain Bolt, Asafa Powell, Yohan Blake, Warren Weir, Shelly-Ann Fraser, Veronica Campbell and many other stars in the track and field world.
Fifteen years ago Jamaica was hardly recognised for anything track and field related.
More Jamaicans supported football compared to track and field. Now Jamaicans prefer track and field and support other countries in football.
If any country was playing against Jamaica, they’d support the opponent.
This all comes from the lack of faith they have in the entire Jamaica football organisation.
